Ribbed Beanie Hat for Women - Jeris Swanhorst
Knit this winter hat using knit purl ribbing.

While many times ribbed patterns are used for cuffs on projects such as hats and mittens, ribbed patterns can be used for more than that. Create this ribbed hat by combining knit and purl stitches. The result will be a one-size-fits-most adult woman's winter hat.

This project is a beginner to intermediate level of difficulty. The basic ribbing pattern is simple to complete, but the decreasing for the top of the hat might pose a bit of difficulty for those new to knitting. The decreasing involves knitting or purling two stitches together at a time. The other technique needed to complete the project is to sew a seam to close the back of the hat.

Materials Needed

  • Lion Brand Jiffy Yarn - 1 (3 oz) Skein
  • Size 8 Knitting Needles
  • Yarn Needle

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • sts - stitches
  • K - knit
  • P - purl
  • tog - together

Knitting Instructions

  • Repeat this row until the piece measures 6 inches from the beginning

  • Next Row: (K1, K2 tog) across
  • Next Row: (K2 tog) across
  • Next Row: (K2 tog) across

Finishing the Hat

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about a foot in length).
  • Using the yarn needle, draw the yarn through the remaining stitches on the knitting needle.
  • Pull tightly and secure.
  • With the hat inside-out, sew the back seam.
  • Sew in any loose ends.
  • Turn the hat right-side out.

The yarn used for this project is Jiffy yarn. It is a soft, bulky-weight acrylic that has the look of mohair. There are a variety of colors available, currently 51 if ordered online from LionBrand.com, to suit the taste of the recipient of the hat being made. To care for the yarn, machine wash in cool water. The hat can be dried in a dryer on any heat setting, but an iron cannot be used on this yarn.

When it says knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches, does that mean the row starts off as knit 2, purl 2, knit 1 or purl 2, knit 2 purl 1?
