Knit scarves with super bulky weight yarn and large needles for quick, warm homemade accessories.

Tired of knitting the same garter-stitch or ribbed scarf? Try a more interesting design that looks much more complicated than it is to make. The crossover column stitch used for this scarf creates a mock--cable design that works well with super-bulky weight yarn. If using the same stitch pattern with a lighter-weight yarn, a lacy effect is prominent between the columns.

This pattern is for intermediate knitters. The techniques needed include casting on, the knit stitch, purl stitch, yarn over, slip stitch, passing a slipped stitch over, binding off, and weaving in loose ends. Beginning knitters can view the following tutorials to learn how to slip a stitch. Visit Lion Brand Yarn's website for more knitting tutorials.

Knitting Materials Needed for the Scarf

  • Size 15 Knitting Needles
  • Super-Bulky Weight Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Abbreviations Used in this Pattern

  • st - stitch
  • sts - stitches
  • K - knit
  • P - purl
  • YO - yarn over
  • Sl - slip

Determining Gauge

Because this pattern is for a scarf, gauge is not important. Gauge is necessary for projects that need to fit a certain way, and scarves can vary slightly without issue.

Instructions for Knitting the Scarf

  • Cast on 13 sts
  • Row 1: Purl all stitches
  • Row 2: K1, (YO, Sl 1, K2, pass the Sl st over the two K sts) to the end of the row
  • Row 3: Purl all stitches
  • Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the skein of yarn runs out or until the desired length is reached, ending with a Row 3.
  • Bind off all stitches.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a five-inch tail.
  • Use the yarn needle to weave in the loose ends from the cast on and bind off rows.

Yarn Choice

While any super-bulky weight yarn will work for this pattern, consider using one that is soft and is machine washable. Especially when gift-giving, consider the ease of caring for the knitted item; some people don't like to hand-wash or dry-clean accessories.

The yarn used in the pictured scarf is Loops & Threads Country Loom yarn in Caravan. It is 100% acrylic, and therefore is machine washable and dryer safe. The downfall of acrylic is that it will eventually begin to pill after a lot of wear and washing. Whatever your preference of yarn type, consider choosing a yarn with a vibrant color that will showcase the intricate look of the stitch pattern.

Other yarn suggestions are Lion Brand's Wool-Ease Thick and Quick yarn in Raspberry or Blossom and Lion Brand's Hometown USA yarn in New Orleans French Berry, Green Bay, or Charlotte Blue.
