Make a knit scarf as a decorative wardrobe accessory for yourself or to give as a gift. Hand-knit scarves are relatively inexpensive, and they can be customized to a person's individual taste with the selection of yarn types and colors. This pattern is for a circular scarf, which is sometimes called an infinity scarf. A circular scarf is knit into a circle, where the ends of the scarf connect; instead of hanging down at either end, this scarf forms a loop that can be wrapped around the neck.
While scarves are often very easy projects or beginning knitters, this scarf is knit in the round on a set of four double pointed knitting needles. Therefore, it is a bit more difficult than a traditional scarf knit on two straight needles. The techniques needed to complete this pattern include casting on, dividing stitches among three needles, joining stitches in the round, knitting in the round, binding off, sewing a seam, and sewing in loose ends. For more information or tutorials on how to complete any of these techniques, visit the Learn to Knit section of the Lion Brand website, which has a lot of knitting information and resources.
Knitting Supplies and Materials Needed for This Pattern
- Set of four size 9 double pointed knitting needles. Try Clover brand bamboo needles, which are 7 inches long. They can be purchased at Joann.com.
- 1 3-ounce skein of Spa yarn by NaturallyCaron.com in Ocean Spray.
- Yarn needle. Try Susan Bates Luxite Plastic Yarn Needles, which can be purchased at Joann.com.
Circular Knit Scarf Knitting Instructions
- Using the double pointed needles, cast on 39 stitches.
- Divide the stitches evenly onto three of the four needles (13 stitches on each needle).
- Join the stitches in the round by attaching the first stitch on needle one to the last stitch on needle three.
- Knit each round until the piece measures at least four feet two inches. Note: For a longer scarf, keep knitting until the scarf reaches the desired length. However, this will likely require more than one 3-ounce skein of Spa yarn.
- Bind off.
- Using the yarn needle, sew the ends of the scarf together, making a connected loop.
- Finish by sewing in any loose ends.
Variations on the Circular Knit Scarf Pattern
To make a wide-striped scarf, purchase two skeins of Spa yarn in contrasting or complementary color. Follow the first three instructions using the first color. When you get to the fourth step, instead of knitting with the same color until the piece measures four feet two inches, alternate colors every five inches to create the wide-stripe pattern. For a narrow-stripe pattern, use as many colors of yarn as desired and switch every few inches.
