Homemade knit dishcloths are a great easy project for beginning knitters since they don't require many types of stitches or advanced techniques. They are also simple projects for more advanced knitters to create quickly, and they make wonderful, useful gifts. This pair of dishcloths can be knit in an evening or two by an intermediate knitter or just slightly longer for beginners.
The pictured dishcloths were knit with Lily Sugar 'n Cream Twists cotton yarn in Taupe, but any worsted weight cotton yarn could be used. Also, the size of the dishcloths will depend on the size of needles used. For a smaller, more tightly knit dishcloth, consider changing to size 7 knitting needles. For a looser knit, larger cloth, consider switching to size 9.

Variations on Dishcloths
For variations on these dishcloths, try using different colors of LIly Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn. They come in solids, mixed colors, and twists, so there are plenty of options there. Consider making one cloth in one color and the other cloth in a different complimentary color to make an attractive coordinating set. Or, for an even more creative twist, consider making the easy knit dishcloth in two contrasting colors. For that pattern, follow the instructions above, but instead of continuing for 8 inches with one color, work 4 inches with the first color and the second 4 inches with the next color. This can add even more visual appeal.
A gift idea that works well is to find a small basket, knit a few dishcloths, such as these, and also knit or crochet some pot holders or hot pads. Then, add a few wooden spoons, measuring cups, or other kitchen gadget items or snack or dessert mixes, and you have a great homemade gift.
