Simple Scarf to Crochet - Jeris Swanhorst
Crochet this scarf using extra bulky weight yarn and a size M crochet hook.

Scarves can be a great crochet project for beginners. A scarf such as this one uses only the basic chaining technique and the simple double crochet stitch, so it is a very simple pattern. It can be created in a relatively short amount of time, as well, even by those new to crochet.

Scarves also make excellent, practical gifts to give to friends or family members. So, whether new to crochet or more advanced, a quick, functional scarf pattern can be useful. Scarves do not require an exact size or measurement, and it is easy to adapt them for the recipient of the gift by selecting the yarn color or type to accommodate that person. This scarf is made using super bulky weight yarn, so it is especially warm.

Materials

  • 2 Skeins Lion Brand Thick & Quick Yarn
  • Size M Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • Ch – Chain
  • DC – Double Crochet

Crochet Techniques Needed to Complete This Pattern

  • Making a slip knot
  • Chaining
  • Double crochet stitch
  • Joining a new strand of yarn
  • Fastening off
  • Sewing in loose ends

Instructions

  • Ch 20
  • DC in third Ch from hook, DC in each chain across, Ch 3, Turn
  • DC in each DC across, Ch 3, Turn
  • Repeat the last row four more times, omitting the Ch 3, Turn on the last time
  • Fasten off, sew in loose ends.

To Make Fringe/Tassels

Make 10 tassels, five for each end of the scarf, by cutting 40 lengths of yarn 16 inches each. Using four strands of yarn together, center the tassel in the middle of a DC and create a knot by wrapping the strands around each other and pulling tightly. Repeat for all 10 tassels.

Variations on Scarf Pattern

For a variation of this scarf pattern, consider making a two-tone or multicolor scarf. This can be done by using more than one color of yarn and changing to a new color at the beginning of a new row. To start a new color, simply begin the last double crochet of a row as usual, adding the new strand of yarn on the last loop of that stitch. That way, the new color of yarn is secured in place to begin the next row. If switching to different colors for different rows, be sure to match the tassels to the colors of the row they are attached to.

The picture looks as if it is of a scarf crochet side to side while the instructions are for end to end. So for a side to side how what was the count on the beginning chain?
