Using a variety of colors makes this simple scarf design stand out.

Scarves are one of the easiest projects to knit because they often require the use of only one or two basic techniques. However, using a simple scarf pattern doesn't have to make for a boring scarf. Consider adding multiple colors to a basic design to create a project with visual appeal. The pictured scarf was knit using two strands of different colored yarn at a time, using seven colors total to create the color pattern.

If using different colors than those listed below to complete this project, be sure to think about how the colors used compliment one another and that light colors are paired with dark colors, and that none of the colors held together are too similar so that they look the same when the scarf is seen from a distance. Don’t be afraid to use scraps of left over yarn to complete this project, either, which can be a great way to use up bits of remaining yarn from other projects.

Materials

  • Size 15 Knitting Needles
  • Yarn Needle
  • 7 Different Colors of Worsted Weight Yarn

Colors

  • A: Grey
  • B: Beige
  • C: Purple
  • D: Dark Green
  • E: Dark Blue
  • F: Lime Green
  • G: Light Blue

Color Pattern

  • 16 Rows A and E Held Together
  • 8 Rows E and B Held Together
  • 24 Rows B and D Held Together
  • 8 Rows D and C Held Together
  • 16 Rows C and F Held Together
  • 8 Rows F and G Held Together
  • 24 Rows G and D Held Together
  • 8 Rows D and A Held Together
  • 16 Rows A and C Held Together
  • 8 Rows C and B Held Together
  • 24 Rows B and G Held Together
  • 8 Rows G and E Held Together

Instructions

  • Cast on 20 stitches, holding together A and E.
  • Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1
  • Continue in Knit 1, Purl 1 Rib, following the color pattern.
  • Once pattern is complete, cast off.
  • Sew in all loose ends.

The finished product is a multicolored scarf, the colors seeming to blend in to one another due to the pattern in which they are used. The completed scarf is roughly five feet long, but it could be made longer by continuing again at the beginning of the pattern until the desired scarf length is reached.

Variations on Scarf Pattern

For additions to the scarf, consider adding tassels to both ends or pom poms on each corner of the scarf’s ends. For a more traditional scarf design, consider using only two colors to make the scarf, completing the knit 1, purl 1 rib for up to six feet, holding the two strands of yarn together. This will create a more understated scarf. Or, simply go traditional, holding two strands of the same color together to make a simple, classic scarf.
