Knit this warm and soft scarf using five different complimentary colors of Lion Brand's Homespun yarn. It is a bulky weight yarn that looks great in even the simplest of stitches, as is seen with this basic, garter stitch pattern. The color stripe pattern can be done in any way desired, but the pictured scarf was knit following the instructions provided.
This project is easy enough for beginners to knit without difficulty. It only requires the use of garter stitch and the ability to switch colors of yarn. Be sure that the new strands are added at the end of an even numbered row to keep the scarf looking neat. Experienced knitters can make this scarf in an evening or two, and it makes an excellent winter gift.

Variations on the Striped Scarf Pattern
For a more uniform look, consider making all of the stripes the same length rather than alternating among various lengths. Also, consider using only two colors instead of five for a bit more traditional looking scarf. For a more whimsical look, add yarn fringes to the both ends of the scarf by cutting 14 inch lengths of yarn, in the colors used for the stripe pattern, and knot onto the cast on and cast off stitches. For a more tightly knit look, switch to smaller needles and cast on more stitches. For an even more open pattern, use even larger needles.
This scarf is machine washable and dryable, so it is a great winter accessory that requires little maintenance. Homespun yarn is 98% acrylic and 2% polyester. The skeins used for this project were 6 ounces each, or 170 grams. Some yarn will be left over from each skein, so there is no need to buy more than one skein per color.
