Basic Knit Wool Socks - Jeris Swanhorst
This pattern creates a pair of basic wool socks, a great project for intermediate knitters.

Socks can be difficult to knit, but following this pattern will create a simple sock that can be made with relatively little difficulty. The finished socks will fit a size 6/7 foot, and the pattern can be adjusted to fit a larger size.

Materials

  • 1 Skein Worsted Weight Wool Yarn, Such as Lion Brand Wool Ease
  • Set of 4 Size 7 Double Pointed Needles
  • Yarn Needle

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • R: Round
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • N: Needle
  • Sl: Slip
  • Psso: Pass over
  • Tog: Together
  • Sts: Stitches

Instructions

  • Cast on 36 Sts. Divide evenly onto 3 needles. Join in the round.
  • R1-R4: K2, P2 rib
  • R5: Knit
  • Repeat R5 until piece measures 7.5 inches from the beginning.
  • Divide Sts for heel. Place 9 Sts from N1 and N3 onto N1 (18 Sts). Place the rest of the Sts on N2. Cut the yarn.
  • Rejoin yarn to the 18 Sts for the heel with the right side of the work facing.
  • R1: (Sl 1, K1) across
  • R2: Sl 1, (P) across
  • R3: (Sl 1, K1) across
  • Repeat R2 and R3 for 15 rounds.

To Turn Heel

  • R16: Sl 1, P10, P2 Tog, P1, Turn
  • R 17: Sl 1, K5, Sl 1, K1, Psso, K1, Turn
  • R 18: Sl 1, P6, P2 Tog, P1, Turn
  • R 19: Sl 1, K7, Sl 1, K1, Psso, K1, Turn
  • R 20: Sl 1, P8, P2 Tog, P1, Turn
  • R 21: Sl 1, K9, Sl 1, K1, Psso, K1

Shape the Foot

  • Pick up and knit 9 Sts along left side of heel with the right side facing.
  • Knit across the next 18 Sts.
  • Pick up and king 9 Sts from the other side of the heel.
  • Next two rounds: Knit
  • Knit first 6 Sts for heel; divide Sts as follows: N1: 6 Sts for heel and next 8 Sts (14 Sts), N2: 20 Sts. N3: 14 Sts.
  • Next round (Decrease Round): N1: Knit to the last 2 Sts: K2 Tog, N2: Knit, N3: Sl 1, K1, Psso, (K) to end of the needle.
  • Next 2 Rounds: Knit
  • Next Round: Repeat the Decrease Round
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Next Round: Decrease Round
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Next Round: Decrease Round
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Knit 27 more rounds.

Begin Shaping Toe

  • Next Round (Decrease Round): N1: Knit to last 2 Sts, K2 Tog., N2: Sl 1, K1, Psso, (K) to last 2 Sts, K2 Tog, N3: Sl 1, K1, Psso, (K) to end of needle.
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Next Round: Repeat Decrease Round
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Next Round: Decrease Round
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Next Round: Decrease Round
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Next Round: Decrease Round

Finishing

  • Divide onto two needles: 10 Sts and 10 Sts, by knitting 5 off of N1 onto N3. Graft the Sts together.
  • Sew in loose ends.
  • Repeat all steps for second sock.

I can't find anything on gauge and just wanted to make sure these socks would be just the right size before I use up all this fine wool on them.

this looks like a great sock to begin with... I would love a sock that used the size needles I have... size 000, 00, 0, 1 and 5 everytime I find a sock pattern its for a differents size needle....LOL
