For some beginning knitters, mittens can be an intimidating project. However, by starting with a simple pattern such as this one, even relatively inexperienced knitters can make warm, classic looking mittens. The trickiest part of creating the mitten is the thumb. One word of caution is to make sure the stitches are added evenly around the thumb without too large of gaps. That way, holes can be avoided.
The pictured mittens were made with two 3.5 ounce skeins of Bernat Alpaca Natural Blends yarn. Because the mittens are not made with 100% synthetic yarn, they will keep hands extra toasty. Also, they will be soft to the touch. Use size 7 double pointed needles for a woman's medium. Use smaller needles and adjust the pattern for smaller mittens, or use larger needles for a larger size finished product.

Variations on Mitten Pattern
For variations on this pattern consider making the cuff a different color from the rest of the mitten or making a stripe pattern by using two different colors of yarn and alternating as the pattern progresses. Some choose to use multicolored self-striping yarn when making mittens to make for an easy yet colorful design.
Once this mitten pattern is completed, these mittens make excellent gifts for friends and family. Since the pattern is a very basic design, they are versatile and can be made in different colors or with different yarns to suit the recipient of the gift.
